Sin City, Batman, and Daredevil. What do they all have in common? The answer is Frank Miller, a creative genius who has put his mind towards developing stories for all three of the aforementioned works. For the past three decades, Miller has been involved in a variety of arts-related endeavors.
After the successful TV show, The Twilight Zone was made in to a comic book series. Frank Miller got his first chance through that series, and he did good on it. Using that credential, he was able to secure other jobs in the comic book industry.
Daredevil is a very well known comic book, and that is the one through which Miller exemplified his full abilities initially. Before Miller, and like other superhero comics, Daredevil had a somewhat light tone, but Miller’s attribution of a darker tone made the comic more appealing.
Although Daredevil was what truly gave Miller his start, it was his work on Batman that made him exceptionally famous. In 1986, DC Comics released his miniseries Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and it was hailed as a redefinition of the Batman image.
Frank Miller was able to completely reverse the image many people held of Batman, which was based on the “BAM” and “POW” antics of the 1960s television show. In fact, ever since Miller’s adaptation, Batman has held the more dark persona than the campy one.
Even people who are not familiar with Frank Miller have probably heard of Sin City, mainly due to its film adaptation. Miller came up with the idea for Sin City in the early 90s, and developed it very thoroughly.
Many consider Frank Miller to have gotten his true start with Batman, and luckily for those fellows Miller has returned to writing Batman stories. The one he is doing now has a more modern approach and tackles real life conflicts.
Miller’s success has been transferred from the comics to the movies. As stated, Sin City was a popular film, as was the Spartan-based film 300. Not all of Miller’s works have been successful, though, as evidenced by the horrible movie The Spirit.
